Gah punctuation! You slay me. Again I pull my weekly favorite quote from Jane Eyre. This is purely for the punctuation. An mdash, semi-colon, and a colon all in one sentence. You do not see that often in English anymore. This excerpt is taken from the scene where Jane is sitting in the dark corner of the drawing room observing her boss as he hosts a gathering of the local gentry. This is where she finally admits to herself that she is in love with him (but like I said it is all about the punctuation):
I looked, and had an acute pleasure in looking,–a precious yet poignant pleasure; pure gold, with a steely point of agony: a pleasure like what the thirst-perishing man might feel who knows the well to which he has crept is poisoned, yet stoops and drinks divine draughts nevertheless.
